How Your personal Story Shapes how People See You

Hero’s Journey storytelling framework showing stages of transformation in narrative structure.

Storytelling and narrative shape how we view success, failure, growth, and personal transformation in both life and work.

Because of this, our narratives make all the difference, whether we are building them in our heads or in front of someone. Therefore, it is relevant that we shape them carefully, thoughtfully and with intention.

Let’s take an example of a success story at work – A project was completed successfully!

Now we can simply say: we successfully completed this project.

OR

We can share the full narrative:

the challenges, the struggles, our actions we took, and the eventual success.

What creates more impact?

Naturally the second approach creates more impact.

After all, people connect more deeply with storytelling because they can witness the Hero’s Journey unfold.

However, what about a failure story- is a failure really a failure?
.
We can say – I failed

OR

We talk about:

The obstacles
the courage
the lessons learned
the growth
and the preparation for future success

In contrast, the first statement becomes a failure story, while the second becomes a powerful personal narrative of resilience and transformation.

In many ways, the stories we repeatedly tell become our internal reality. If we constantly describe ourselves through failure, limitation, or fear, we slowly begin to believe those narratives. On the other hand, when we frame our experiences through growth, resilience, learning, and courage, our mindset begins to shift. This does not mean ignoring pain or pretending challenges do not exist. Instead, it means choosing to see meaning within the journey.

So how are YOU shaping the stories you tell yourself and others?
